According to a senior military spokesperson, the American military executed a lethal kinetic engagement on a boat in the eastern Pacific, killing four people.
“Joint Task Force Southern Spear carried out a deadly attack on a craft operated by a terrorist group in open sea. Intelligence verified the vessel was transiting along a known drug smuggling route and was engaged in illicit drug transport. A total of four male narco-terrorists were eliminated, and no American forces were harmed.”
This announcement comes a day after a declaration regarding a blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. That statement on social media, the US president accused Venezuela of using oil profits to fund narcotics smuggling and criminal activities, vowing to escalate the military buildup.
Just on Tuesday, the Pentagon stated it had carried out strikes on three boats it accused of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Beginning on 2 September, over 20 strikes have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 individuals, most off the coast of Venezuela.
The government has encountered growing pressure to release video of a September 2nd vessel attack. But, the defense secretary have refused to do so. The administration has supported its efforts as a success, saying it has stopped drugs from reaching US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is exceeding the limits of lawful warfare.
While the administration has said the campaign is about halting drugs destined for the US, remarks from a top official seemed to suggest a wider geopolitical aim. In a recent interview, the chief of staff said the leader “wants to keep on blowing boats up until the Venezuelan president cries uncle.”
This suggests the series of strikes may be linked to a push to remove Venezuela's sitting leadership.
