Analysis Finds Manufactured Substances in Our Food Supply Generating a Public Health Toll of $2.2tn Each Year

Experts have delivered a critical alert, stating that several synthetic chemicals integral to modern farming are fueling higher rates of cancer, neurodevelopmental disorders, and infertility, while simultaneously degrading the very foundations of global agriculture.

The yearly financial toll from exposure to substances like phthalates, bisphenols, agrochemicals, and "forever chemicals" is valued at around $2.2 trillion—a immense sum on par with the aggregate income of the world's 100 largest listed corporations, states a fresh study.

Additionally, the majority of ecological damage remains not accounted for. However even a limited accounting of ecological impacts—considering agricultural losses and the expense of complying with water safety regulations for such chemicals—implies an additional cost of $640 billion. The report also warns of profound population ramifications, stating that if current exposure levels to endocrine disruptors persist, there could be between 200 million and 700 million less children born globally between 2025 and 2100.

A Stark "Alert" from Medical Experts

One key researcher on the report, a respected paediatrician and academic of global public health, called the results a "powerful wake-up call".

"Humanity really has to become aware and tackle chemical pollution," he said. "It is my contention that the problem of chemical pollution is every bit as serious as the problem of climate change."

The expert explained a concerning shift in pediatric health issues during his extended career. While diseases from infections have dropped significantly, there has been an "astonishing increase" in non-communicable diseases, with increasing exposure to thousands of manufactured chemicals being a "significant cause."

The Ubiquitous Chemicals in the Food Chain

The investigation particularly focuses on the impact of four groups of artificial chemicals pervasive in global food production:

• Plasticizers and Bisphenols: Often used as plastic additives, they are present in containers and disposable gloves used in cooking.
• Herbicides: These enable large-scale agriculture, with huge single-crop farms spraying large volumes on crops to eliminate pests, and many produce being sprayed post-harvest to maintain freshness.
• Pfas: Employed in greaseproof paper, food containers, and packaging, these persistent chemicals have built up in the environment to the point of entering the food chain through contamination.

All of these chemical groups have been linked to grave harms, including endocrine interference, multiple cancers, birth defects, cognitive impairment, and obesity.

A Largely Unchecked Issue with Unknown Consequences

Public and environmental contact to manufactured chemicals has exploded since the 1950s, with worldwide chemical production growing over 200-fold. Currently, there are over 350,000 different chemicals on the international market.

Importantly, in contrast to drugs, there are scant testing requirements to ensure the long-term effects of industrial chemicals before they are released onto widespread use, and inadequate monitoring of their effects afterward. Several have subsequently been found to be disastrously harmful to humans, animals, and the environment.

The lead expert expressed special worry about chemicals that damage children's brains and hormone-altering compounds. The researcher emphasized that the chemicals studied in the report are "just the beginning," representing a tiny fraction of substances for which robust safety data exists.

"The thing that terrifies me profoundly is the thousands of chemicals to which we're all exposed every day about which we know nothing," he admitted. "And one of them causes something overtly dramatic, like children to be born with severe deformities, we're going to go on unthinkingly subjecting ourselves."
