The British designer Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer behind some of the most iconic looks favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.

Price was best known for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, such as the soft-colored suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."

This news arrives just weeks after he presented his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by the late Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he began designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he started creating pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as a number of outfits for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.

Following a profession lasting half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Performative Style: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The industry mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose impact on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
