The following day the alleged incident, the city leader said that restoration to the popular public artwork would be costly as the stickers could not be detached without harming the art piece.

“This wilful damage to a cherished community art is inappropriate and disrespectful,” City of Mount Gambier mayor remarked in mid-September. “It is not harmless fun, it is costly - it is also disappointing to those people of our community who have embraced Cast in Blue.”

The mayor added the council would pursue the “substantial” restoration expenses from those accountable for the damage.

At the time the artwork was first proposed, it received mixed reactions from the local community due to its cost and design.

Costing A$136,000 ($89,000; sixty-eight thousand pounds), the artwork represents a legendary giant animal, with the sculpture’s designers influenced by an ancient marsupial ant-eater discovered in local caves that was “massive, lumbering and fascinating”.
