Witness testimonies emerged of numerous blasts and the sound of low-altitude planes in the Venezuelan capital in the small hours of the weekend. This event has prompted claims from Venezuela's leadership and calls for international action.
The authoritarian administration has accused the US of committing "foreign aggression," alleging that ex- President Trump reportedly directed strikes against the South American country. In an public announcement, the authorities stated that attacks had targeted the capital and three other states: Miranda state, La Guaira state, and Aragua state.
"The only objective of this attack is to seize control of our nation's key assets, notably its petroleum and mineral wealth," Venezuela asserted.
Caracas called on the global community to condemn the strikes, which it termed a "clear infringement of global law" that put millions of lives at risk in jeopardy.
Residents reported experiencing at least several detonations around the middle of the night local time. Citizens in different neighborhoods allegedly ran into the open.
"The earth trembled. This is terrifying. We experienced blasts and jets in the distance," said one resident.
Black smoke was seen rising from major defense sites in Caracas: the La Carlota military airfield and the Fuerte Tiuna base military base, where leader Maduro is believed to have a residence.
The leader of bordering Colombia, Gustavo Petro, stated on X that "Currently they are bombing Caracas... bombing it with projectiles." He called for an immediate meeting of the Security Council.
Colombia, which just joined the UNSC, said it would activate operational protocols at its border with Venezuela.
These alleged attacks are preceded by a months-long military buildup by the Trump administration against the Venezuelan administration. Since last summer, authorities reported a significant US military deployment off Venezuela's Caribbean coast and a series of strikes on ships accused of narco-trafficking.
Venezuela's administration has announced "the implementation of emergency" and directed all national defence plans to be implemented. It has also urged its political forces to mobilize and "reject this imperialist attack."
US authorities and the Defense Department have not publicly responded to requests for clarification regarding the allegations.
