Did Sony achieved another hit? Coming after the triumph of the hit anime Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which earned in excess of $600 million worldwide, the latest Chainsaw Man film has officially crossed the $100 million threshold worldwide, attaining a global total of over $108 million this weekend. The film beat out the thriller Black Phone 2 (almost $13 million) in its second weekend in movie houses, as well as Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere starring Jeremy Allen White ($9M).
The work of filmmaker Tatsuya Yoshihara, the feature is a direct continuation of the debut season of the Chainsaw Man series. It grossed $18.2M in North America after a powerful $5.2 million Saturday and $4.5 million Sunday take. Overseas, the produced by MAPPA feature grossed $14.7M across 46 Sony markets, pushing its worldwide total to $60.4 million via Sony ($43.1M abroad, $18.2 million domestic). The studio has not yet revealed its final earnings figure.
Anime marketing agency an industry expert noted in prior discussions, comparing the movie's expected results to the popular film Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which earned thirty-four million dollars in the domestic market in the year 2022 and opened to a comparable $18 million domestically. Reze Arc’s debut weekend is in line with that marker, while its $108M international sum currently tracks a bit short of Jujutsu Kaisen 0’s over $166 million total earnings. Although it’s unlikely this Chainsaw Man film will match the box office of mega hit the enormous hit Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, nonetheless, it is a major victory for Sony.
Sony and its subsidiary the anime streaming service Crunchyroll have successfully utilized fan engagement to boost their dominance at the anime box office. The Reze Arc advertising push kicked off at the Los Angeles Anime Expo in the month of July with a MAPPA presentation, exclusive activations, and photo opportunities with Pochita, and later included a significant involvement at NYCC showcasing never-before-seen content, audience giveaways, and additional MAPPA panels. Additionally, there was an special preview for fans for general audiences and content creators as well after the final day of the convention.
This year marks a big year for animated films, and for Sony, which has an additional animated movie debuting in 2025 in the upcoming Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in the month of November.
