US air traffic controllers are increasingly looking for additional employment and reporting ill, as they remain on duty without pay during the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has stated.
"These professionals are wearing thin," the official told Fox News on the weekend, as certain aircraft were halted on the Californian coast due to personnel deficits.
Following the government shut down on 1 October, air traffic controllers, who are considered critical staff, were instructed to continue performing their jobs uncompensated.
But some have been missing, causing airports to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has exacerbated delays caused by weather and other issues.
Over 3,000 American flights were delayed on the weekend, and the secretary said he expects the situation to grow worse.
"I observe the pressure," he remarked in an interview on Sunday Morning Futures, adding that he had met with multiple professionals to hear their worries firsthand.
"They're taking second jobs, they're out there searching, 'Should I drive Uber, am I able to secure an alternative of income to cover expenses?'" he continued.
Duffy added that on Saturday 22 alerts at airfields indicated travel would be held up due to a lack of workers - one of the highest after the closure began.
The American federal closure reached its twenty-sixth day on Sunday, rendering it the second-longest shutdown in the past.
He has repeatedly warned that flight authorities would slow down the number of planes in the air if there is a shortage of safety personnel.
In his interview, he declined to respond directly when questioned if it was safe to fly in the US, and instead issued a personal plea to the professionals.
"I require my controllers focused on the flight paths, not on the monetary matters at home," the official stated.
On Sunday, certain flights were stopped at LAX due to staffing shortages, causing disruption at the fifth most active terminal in the country and among the most crowded in the world, as well as additional travel extending upward to the city of Oakland.
The Federal Aviation Administration notice was issued at 8:45 AM local time on Sunday. Many flights were back on schedule by midday.
Travel at Newark Airport, however, were delayed an mean of over an hour due to personnel issues, and the authority said Dallas Fort-Worth, the second-busiest airport in the US, could encounter problems from low staffing later in the day.
The FAA advised passengers in California to consult carriers about updated departure times.
The issue comes ahead of Game 3 of the World Series, which is due to be played in LA on Monday night, and about one month prior to the Thanksgiving break, among the peak periods to fly in the United States.
Strain on US air travel contributed to ending a federal closure in two thousand nineteen. At the time, the halt had entered its fifth week and affected flight services, including aviator instruction.
It led several air traffic controllers to remain absent on the same day on 25 January 2019, temporarily stopping travel at LaGuardia Airport in New York.
On that date, Donald Trump, who at the period was in his initial presidency as president, agreed to sign a temporary funding measure, effectively ending the federal closure after thirty-five days.
