A trio of officers lost their lives and no fewer than 15 additional individuals were hurt in an apparently intentional detonation from gas at a farmhouse in the northern part of Italy.
The detonation occurred as police and firefighters approached the house close to the Verona region to enforce an eviction order for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.
The three deceased individuals belonged to the Italian military police.
A man and a woman were arrested at the location and one more individual who ran away after the incident was located soon after. Each of them have been admitted to the hospital.
The blast could be noticed approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the area revealed the property reduced to a pile of rubble.
“We are in a period of mourning,” commented the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that attempts had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.
The head of the region of Veneto, Luca Zaia, stated the farmhouse was subject to an eviction order due to debts incurred by the three owners.
Mediators had been dispatched to speak to the brothers and sister who had locked themselves into the home. When the officers arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe one of the residents caused the detonation.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno informed reporters.
“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the detonation directly hit our personnel,” he added.
Incendiary devices were also discovered at the property, the Interior Minister stated.
The wounded by the incident comprised an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a firefighter.
Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had no electricity.
The prosecutor was convinced the blast had taken place on a level above the entrance and informed the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Just prior to the incident, he mentioned officers had “heard a whistle, presumably the gas canisters being turned on”.
“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors stated to Italian media, noting that the trio had in the past stated to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.
“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto joined other political leaders in paying tribute to the three officers who had died in the line of duty.
