Former US treasury secretary the Harvard professor is departing from the board at the artificial intelligence firm, just days after a collection of emails between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became publicly available.
Summers commented in a release that he was "grateful for the chance to have served, excited about the promise of the enterprise, and eagerly await observing their development".
Summers, who formerly presided over the Ivy League institution, declared on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his association with the convicted sex offender.
The recently released messages demonstrated that the economist corresponded with Epstein until the 24 hours preceding his 2019 apprehension for accused human trafficking of minors.
In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company said it accepted Summers' decision to step down.
"We appreciate his many contributions and the insight he brought to the Board," OpenAI remarked.
This announcement follows after the two houses of the legislative branch agreed on recently to endorse a legislation that would mandate the US justice department to disclose its files on Jeffrey Epstein.
The measure will subsequently head to the office of the White House for approval. Trump has stated he intends to sign the legislation, after reversing his stance on the issue following pushback from his followers.
A collection of Epstein-connected messages released by the House Oversight Committee recently included several prominent individuals in the Epstein's past associates, without indicating any criminal activity by those figures.
The communications revealed that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with Epstein often attempting to introduce the official to prominent global figures.
After the messages were made available with the wider community, the former official said he accepted "total ownership for my poor judgment to continue corresponding with the financier".
He added that he wanted "to restore trust and mend relationships with the people closest to me".
The economist held high-level positions under two Democratic presidents; acting as Treasury chief under President Clinton, and as head of the economic advisory body under President Obama.
He led the university from the early 2000s and remains a faculty member there. When declaring his step-down from public roles earlier on this week, he stated he would maintain his educational duties.
Following the economist's statement on earlier this week, the policy organization, a liberal research organization in Washington where Summers was a researcher, announced that Summers was no longer associated with the group.
Summers joined the board of the AI company, which makes the AI chatbot, in last year - following a defeated move to replace its top executive OpenAI's head.
