I thought I edged it - Carey on review reprieve.

Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey revealed he felt he had nicked the ball when he was reprieved on review during day one of the 3rd Ashes Test against the English.

Having been given a life on 72, Carey went on to make a excellent 106 to guide the Australians post 326-8 at the close in Adelaide.

What happened?

The home side were 245 for 6 when Carey attempted a cut shot to the bowling of Josh Tongue.

England appealed confidently, believing they had heard an edge, but on-field official Ahsan Raza remained unconvinced.

Following captain Ben Stokes opted to review the on-field call, the technology reviewed by TV umpire Chris Gaffaney displayed a significant spike however this registered prior to the ball had made contact with the bat.

Gaffaney also said he believed there was a clearance between bat and ball.

As a result, Carey was allowed to continue.

"I felt a little noise as the ball went past," commented Carey.

"If I was given out I think I would have reviewed it, probably not confidently. There was a definite noise."

Ongoing Scrutiny

Questions have been raised about 'the sound wave technology' during the series after a number of inconclusive incidents.

Bowling coach David Saker suggested the touring side may pursue this latest incident further with match referee Jeff Crowe.

"I don't think we've done anything about it so far but after today, maybe that might go a bit further," Saker said.

"It's been a worry for us all series long. It's disappointing that this is a post-play discussion. It is what it is."

A Special Hundred

Carey's century was his maiden in the Ashes.

It was also an poignant moment for Carey, whose dad passed away in recent months. His spouse was emotional in the crowd as the batsman marked the occasion by looking to the skies.

"Scoring a century at home with family watching was incredible," stated Carey.

"The reason for my look upwards is clear. I'm trying not to tear up. It was a fantastic feeling."

History of Controversy

Carey is not new to Ashes controversy.

He was the wicketkeeper who notoriously dismissed Jonny Bairstow at Lord's Cricket Ground in the 2023 series, resulting in a intense final day.

Speaking about his survival he continued: "Snicko obviously didn't line up. It is just the way cricket goes - sometimes you have a bit of luck."

"I might have gotten away with one."
