A comprehensive study has uncovered that automatically produced content has saturated the natural remedies publication section on Amazon, including items promoting cognitive support gingko formulas, stomach-calming fennel remedies, and immune-support citrus supplements.
According to scanning 558 books made available in the platform's alternative therapies subcategory during the initial nine months of 2024, investigators concluded that the vast majority seemed to be written by AI.
"This constitutes a damning disclosure of the widespread presence of unlabelled, unchecked, unregulated, potentially artificially generated material that has completely invaded the platform," commented the investigation's primary author.
"There exists an enormous quantity of herbal research out there right now that's completely worthless," said a professional herbal practitioner. "Automated systems will not understand the process of filtering through the worthless material, all the rubbish, that's totally insignificant. It could direct users incorrectly."
An example of the ostensibly AI-written publications, Natural Healing Handbook, currently holds the No 1 bestseller in the platform's skin care, aromatherapy and alternative therapies categories. Its introduction touts the book as "a toolkit for self-trust", urging readers to "turn inward" for answers.
The writer is listed as Luna Filby, whose Amazon page describes this individual as a "thirty-five year old herbalist from the seaside community of Byron Bay" and founder of the company a natural remedies business. However, no trace of the writer, the enterprise, or connected parties appear to have any online presence apart from the Amazon page for the title.
Analysis identified several warning signs that indicate possible AI-generated alternative healing text, comprising:
These titles form part of a broader pattern of unverified artificially generated material available for purchase on the platform. Previously, wild mushroom collectors were cautions to bypass foraging books available on the platform, ostensibly written by chatbots and containing unreliable information on identifying deadly fungus from consumable ones.
Publishing officials have called for the marketplace to commence identifying artificially created content. "Any book that is fully AI-written should be labeled as AI-generated and automated garbage should be taken down as a matter of urgency."
In response, the company commented: "Our platform maintains publication standards governing which publications can be displayed for acquisition, and we have active and responsive methods that help us detect material that violates our guidelines, irrespective of if artificially created or different. We commit significant manpower and funds to ensure our standards are adhered to, and eliminate books that fail to comply to those guidelines."
