‘It’s heartbreaking’: the way thirty captive beluga whales are now pawns in dispute over inhumane treatment.

Jelly Bean’s offspring Bertie is an charming small “ham sandwich”. The whale Orion – called “Onion Ring” – is a sizeable but guardian-like friend. Another whale, Zephyr has “constant motion” and moves like a wiggly creature. Lillooet the beluga is the “most affectionate” with a heart of gold.

A group of thirty captive beluga whales in a Canadian entertainment facility have become pawns in a tussle between a defunct facility, government authorities and animal rights activists.

But those closest to the whales say the intense debate over their destiny often ignores the individual traits of the whales who, after growing up in captivity, have been thoroughly researched by the caretakers who interact with them daily.

After the national authorities blocked the sale of the belugas to a foreign facility, the controversial attraction near the famous falls where they are kept threatened to euthanize them unless the government covers the cost of their survival. Canada’s fisheries minister has refused that request, placing the thirty whales in an ever more uncertain position.

Highly Cognitive Sea Creatures

Experts say that belugas’ neural makeup, along with their sound replication, cognitive challenges and social skills indicate they are remarkably smart animals – something one caretaker observed directly.

She spent three years as a whale caretaker, a role that required earning the trust of the marine predators.

“Developing those connections over time takes a lot of dedication and a lot of affection. At the start, they’re very wary of you,” she said. “Eventually, you gain shared confidence. And they start being more vulnerable with you. It’s just so magical and fulfilling.”

Burgess knew the whales were exceptionally cognitive, but she says she was even so astounded by the details and quirks in their personalities. She formed a deep bond for Eve and Cleopatra with opposing temperaments.

“One whale selected me. The other made me earn it,” she said. “They changed the way I view relationships.”

Growing Opposition and Facility Decline

Her relationship with the whales evolved against a context of increasing societal concern to their captivity.

During her time at the facility, seven belugas and the park’s single orca, Kiska, died. In total, nineteen belugas have perished at the park since recent years, a statistic which the facility attributes to expected lifespan, but which advocates say indicates the substandard environment in which they were housed.

The park did not admit visitors to the guests over the recent season, but the former trainer says she observed directly consequences of the shutdown. “Concrete is breaking off from the enclosures because they’re falling apart and not being fixed. The whales are inquisitive and so they grab fragments and navigate with pieces in their mouth. It’s distressing to see.”

The park did not respond to a inquiry, but in the past claimed: “The whales … receive far better veterinary services and constant supervision than any person in the Britain, or elsewhere.”

Fate in Limbo and Proposed Solutions

Burgess was dismissed from the facility in recent months following the passing of Eos, an unwell beluga the caretakers had to humanely kill. She said the park believed details of the death were shared to the news outlets and she was released soon after.

The lack of clarity over the whales’ future has left her and other caretakers in despair. She says the facility’s warning to kill its whales is a bargaining chip and is a “extremely difficult” task, adding any efforts to put down even a single beluga would require “considerable personnel”, vehicles and specialized tools.

“It cannot happen in hell the staff would ever do it,” she said.

Burgess advocates for demands for the whales to be taken immediately from the park, with its failing enclosures and dwindling staff.

In the autumn, Canada’s government official rejected a bid to send the whales to an overseas location.

“To approve the proposal would have meant a ongoing life in enclosure and a return to display for amusement,” the official wrote. “As the public, we know that belugas are meant for the sea, not in enclosures for our entertainment. I could not in ethical standing permit an transfer that would perpetuate the situation these belugas have experienced.”

But Burgess said the official’s comments reveal a wider incorrect perception of the facts of existence for belugas living their whole lives in enclosures.

“The public needs to realize these are whales that have existed solely in enclosed habitats and they will need constant supervision for the foreseeable future,” she said. “The public just don’t understand that it’s not as simple as saying ‘shut it down’.”

Alternative Habitat and Continuing Discussion

As officials struggle to find a answer, suggestions have surfaced, some of which have little basis in reality. A suggested plan called for the belugas to be released into the open waters of Canada’s north – where whales are a primary resource of sustenance for Inuit communities.

A proposed refuge in the province of eastern Canada, which recently received regulatory clearance, has been most controversial. The prospective facility, which includes extensive space of protected cove, is not yet built. Supporters remain hopeful that it could in time represent a long term resolution for some of the whales.

But, Burgess says, among trainers she’s spoken with, there is “doubts there” about what she said is “simply an trial” in the whales’ well-being.

Some experts say the possibility of a refuge reflects a worldwide trend away from captive facilities and could represent a viable approach in the coming months.

The project lead, director of the initiative, said the location will replicate the cognitive activities and diet the whales obtain from trainers, albeit in a much larger area. He said after the well-being of whales is completely examined, which could take months|an extended period|
