Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Signing for United
The forward, with half a year left on her deal, has been a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing is viewed as a major signing for the Women’s Super League team.
Departure from Bayern was expected after she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the club's supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top strikers. Per reports, the formalities for the move have now been completed.
Consistent Goalscoring to Boost the Attack
The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a significant boost to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- For seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Carrington
Securing the German international comes at a time when the club seem to be building positive momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has brought further activity:
- The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the American league, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
