McLaren Attributes Crash to Opposing Racers for Piastri-Norris Collision

Wheel flies off racing car after impact between team drivers

A wheel comes loose from the car of Norris after he crashed into team-mate Piastri at the opening of the US GP sprint event.

McLaren F1 team bosses Brown and Andrea Stella attributed competitors for the crash between Oscar Piastri and Norris at the start of the United States Grand Prix sprint event.

The Australian driver, ahead of Norris in the championship by twenty-two points, made contact with his fellow McLaren driver after making contact with the Hulkenberg.

The collision forced out both team drivers from the event, along with Aston Martin's Alonso, who was on the inner side of the Sauber driver.

Team Executives Voice Frustration Over Crash

Zak Brown, McLaren Racing's CEO, commented to Sky Sports that some of the racing at the front was "inexperienced", stating: "Clearly Nico drove into Oscar and he had no reason being where he was."

McLaren F1 boss Andrea Stella stated: "Our feeling is that we are disappointed that we were denied the chance to race."

"It's surprising that some drivers with a lot of expertise don't act with appropriate caution. Go to the first corner, ensure you avoid harming other drivers and continue."

McLaren suggested that the team principal was mentioning both the Sauber driver and the Aston Martin driver.

Differing Perspectives on the Crash

Nevertheless, 1996 world champion Hill, providing analysis for a sports broadcast, said he believed Piastri had not shown enough awareness of the risks of the opening turn of an F1 race when he chose to move inside to try to overtake his teammate.

The Australian had a better start than Norris and at first competed on the outside on the uphill entry to the turn.

However he then cut back in an effort to get a advantage on his teammate on the exit, only to make contact with Hulkenberg.

Driver Reactions After the Collision

Piastri said: "Less than perfect but I haven't seen what happened, I attempted to cut back on Norris and we were both very far from the apex and then were struck and it propelled me into Lando. A shame."

His teammate commented: "I just was struck, right? I was not at fault. Further back things happened and I just got unlucky and was struck because of it. I don't know. I need to review a bit more carefully. It's more drivers further back just being a bit reckless and we are the consequence of that."

The Aston Martin driver said: "At one point I believed I was in the correct position on the inside, but some vehicles came very fast from the outside switching back and then I was there in the middle."

Hulkenberg, who had earned a best qualifying fourth place, said: "Big frustrations. All the good work from yesterday in the trash. Just messy."

"Oscar turned in pretty aggressively trying to get the undercut and exit of the first corner but I cannot vanish."

"I had Fernando attack on the inside and I was unable to see him any more. I wanted to provide room for him and then Oscar turned in and the contact was unavoidable."

Aftermath and Team Response

The team will analyze the incident with their racers but only after the race weekend. Both vehicles needed extensive work before grand prix qualifying at 22:00 BST on the weekend.

The team principal said: "Overall disappointed but we accept it, we are now focusing on fixing the vehicles, there is a lot to do and then we will resume the event from there."

"We are in a strong position from our performance point of view so I trust we have the opportunity to compete, compete fairly and capitalise on our capabilities."

"Championship points are the most important thing, I prefer not to talk about bad intentions, just prudence. A bit more prudence would be good for all involved."

Championship Implications

The sprint event was won by the Verstappen, who gained ground on both team racers in the standings - he is now 55 points behind Piastri and 33 adrift of the Briton.

Stella said: "The consequence is what the numbers says - we missed out on eight points with both drivers, but we focus on ourselves. We have a very competitive vehicle and two strong racers. We look forward to just some standard competition."

Verstappen said he was approaching the championship race by race.
