New England Warming Faster Than Most Places on Earth, Study Finds.

The American area famous for its colonial history, maple syrup and bitterly cold, snow-bound winters is undergoing a swift change. Fresh analysis finds that New England is heating up more quickly than nearly any other place on the Earth.

Breakneck Pace of Change

The rate of warming in New England makes it the fastest-heating area of the contiguous United States, as per the research. The rate of its temperature rise has apparently accelerated significantly in the past five years.

"Temperatures is not only increasing, it's accelerating," stated a primary researcher on the study. "It's really sped up in recent years, which surprised me. Our regional climate is moving in a new direction, after being largely consistent for millennia."

The analysis positions the north-eastern US among the fastest-warming areas in the world, alongside the polar region and parts of Europe and China. "New England is now moving toward being like the south-eastern US," the scientist noted.

Study Approach and Findings

For the study, researchers examined three datasets on daily temperature extremes and snowpack dating back to 1900. The analysis covered the six states of the New England region.

They discovered that New England has heated up by an average of 2.5°C (4.5°F) from 1900 to 2024. This is substantially higher than the worldwide mean, with the planet heating by around 1.3 degrees Celsius in the same period.

"That is very fast heating, which is concerning," said the study author.

Notable Climate Trends

  • Nighttime temperatures are increasing more quickly than daytime temperatures.
  • Winters are warming at double the speed of other times of year.
  • The severe cold New England is known for is being reduced.

Oceanic Influences and the "Heat Battery"

A major reason for this unusual accumulation of heat may be shifts in the North Atlantic. The global seas are absorbing the vast majority of the surplus thermal energy captured by emissions.

In the north Atlantic, an increase of cold, fresh water from Arctic ice melt is slowing down the Gulf Stream. This is directing warmer water into the coastal waters, congregating heat along the shoreline that is then pushed inland by prevailing winds.

"The excess heat from climate change is being stored in the sea like a huge battery," explained the researcher. "This is now being released into the atmosphere and New England is a receiver of that heat."

Impacts on Life and Extremes

Once considered a mild climate haven, New England has experienced extreme weather shocks in recent years, including enormous flooding and prolonged dry spells.

The rising heat endangers cherished elements of local culture:

  • Maple syrup production is being affected by shifting seasonal patterns.
  • Cold-weather activities are disrupted; an hockey tournament on frozen lakes has been canceled or relocated repeatedly due to unsafe ice conditions.
  • Ski resorts have struggled because of inadequate snowfall.

"I live just north of Boston and when I moved here in the 1990s I used to skate on the ponds regularly," said the researcher. "That tradition has pretty much vanished from large parts of southern New England."
