Offspring of Former South African Head of State Jacob Zuma Rejects Terrorism Accusations as Legal Proceedings Begins

The daughter of former South African Leader Jacob Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terrorism-related charges at the commencement of her court case in the coastal city of Durban city.

Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being prosecuted over comments she published on social media in the past during deadly demonstrations in South Africa that followed the detention of her dad.

A seven-day period of disorder in various areas of the country in mid-2021, including looting and fire-setting, resulted in at least 300 deceased and resulted in damage worth an projected 2.8 billion dollars (£2.2 billion).

The defendant has been charged of encouraging this violence and faces accusations of encouragement to commit terror-related activities and public violence.

History of the Case

The unrest were concentrated in the regions of the Gauteng province and KwaZulu-Natal and were triggered by the former president's arrest for disobeying a judicial ruling to appear as a witness at an investigation into claims of corruption while he was in power.

Ms Zuma-Sambudla has always rejected the allegations against her, with her attorney in the past describing the prosecution's legal argument as unsubstantiated.

She has also consistently said the accusations against her were an effort to settle political scores with her parent after he founded his own political organization and campaigned against the ruling party.

Backing and Legal Defense

This was supported by the Zuma foundation, which stated the legal matter was an "abuse of power" and a "systematic campaign" of "politically motivated and familial persecution" against the former president and his kin.

The defense has stated that the testimony presented by government lawyers is unconvincing and fails to provide substantial evidence for a conviction.
