'Major setback' for the English camp as Atkinson is forced off due to a hamstring issue.
Gus Atkinson further complicated the fitness woes of the England squad upon exiting the ground during Saturday's play in the Melbourne Test against Australia.
Atkinson experienced discomfort in his hamstring after the final ball that he bowled on Saturday.
The England team reported the 27-year-old reported "discomfort" and required time off the field to undergo evaluation "during the day".
The final Test in this Ashes battle at the SCG starts at the end of the week.
England have already lost strike bowlers one seamer with a knee problem and Jofra Archer to a side strain on this Ashes tour.
A replacement bowler was called up to provide backup.
His form was underwhelming in the opening two Tests, managing only a handful of scalps.
He was omitted for the Adelaide match, before being recalled for the Boxing Day match as Archer's replacement.
Atkinson showed better form in Melbourne, taking two wickets in Australia's first innings, before adding 28 with the bat among just a trio of England players to get into double digits.
After bowling one over late on the first day, he came back on Saturday morning and dismissed the nightwatchman Scott Boland caught behind.
Yet, at the end of his spell, he delivered a variation to the batsman and suddenly grabbed for his hamstring.
Gus Atkinson returned to the side for the Boxing Day Test having missed the previous Test.
