Although not quite at the same level as granting clemency to holiday birds, but the county's top official conducted a Donald Trump moment this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a second term in office.
“Unless you count eating six or seven apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a prosperous future away from worry.”
The event, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to emulate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The swine, donated by a local firefighter, was christened after the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “six seven” – inspired by a musical verse – often seemingly at random. The phrase became so widespread that a prominent word reference recently made “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
The pardoned swine is now scheduled to spend its days at a countryside refuge “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to begin the holiday season,” said the cafe owner, in a notably cheerful message.
“It represents the character of Miami: joyful, multicultural, and based in heritage that bring people together. Each year, we are proud to celebrate heritage and mercy in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
