Wealthy businessman Jared Isaacman has been voted in as the new administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, concluding an extraordinary confirmation journey where the President put his name forward, pulled the nomination, and then renominated him.

The 42-year-old, an private pilot who became the first private citizen to perform a spacewalk, is also the first NASA administrator in decades to come directly from outside public service.

For a significant portion of the space community, the legacy of his leadership will be determined by one key benchmark: whether it can send astronauts to the Moon ahead of the Chinese space program.

The President has emphasized a desire for the United States to create a lasting moon outpost, both to enable harvesting materials and to act as a launching pad for travel to Mars.

Senate Vote and Background

On Wednesday, the Senate cleared his appointment with a 67-30 vote.

Trump initially pulled Isaacman's nomination in May, referencing a "deep dive of previous relationships".

At the period, the president was publicly feuding with tech billionaire Musk, one of his major contributors, with whom Isaacman has business connections.

The new administrator indicates he is now fully behind the presidential objective to extract lunar resources, putting him at odds with Musk, who has said that lunar missions is a distraction from the primary objective of reaching Mars.

Future Direction

In the present global space race, countries are vying to utilize the moon's resources.

“This is not the time for hesitation but a time for action because if we fall behind, if we stumble, we may never catch up, and the results could change the balance of power here on our planet,” Isaacman told US Senators earlier this month.

The billionaire entrepreneur sees fostering more commercial rivalry as key to achieving those goals, according to a recently disclosed memo outlining his vision for the agency.

In his testimony, he supported the strategy, which he crafted when he was initially selected, but clarified it was a work in progress.

His welcoming of rivalry could also cause friction with Musk. Recently, Isaacman commended the award of a significant agreement to Jeff Bezos's company, which is one of the main challengers of Musk's SpaceX.

In the strategy paper, he recommended NASA should increasingly partner with universities and academic institutions, positioning the agency as a "force multiplier for scientific discovery".

He highlighted the planned deployment of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope as a prime illustration.

"Should we be close to something remarkable - like deploying the Roman Telescope - I will leave no stone unturned to see it launched, even providing personal financing if that's what it takes to achieve the scientific results," he remarked.

Background and Net Worth

According to analyses, his wealth is valued at approximately $1.2bn, accumulated through his payment processing company and the divestment of his company that trained pilots and managed a collection of military aircraft.

The top job at NASA will be his first job in public office, a break from the previous two appointees who served as NASA chief.

He will replace the former transportation secretary, who has acted as interim NASA chief since the summer.
